History and sights of Berchtesgaden

This German municipality in the Bavarian Alps, bordering Austria, and its neighboring regions are home to many tourist attractions, including the pilgrimage church of Maria Gern, particularly magnificent on a cool autumn dawn, with the backdrop of the Watzmann mountain (2713 m altitude) in the Berchtesgaden Alps.

The pilgrimage to this church in the district of Maria Gern, a short distance from the center of the municipality, dates back to the year 1600 in devotion to its Madonna, and its current building was erected between 1708 and 1710, being considered one of the most beautiful rural churches from Upper Bavaria.

The elevated areas around Berchtesgaden offer beautiful views, such as the Kapelle der Seligpreisungen (Chapel of Bliss), facing the Watzmann.

Lake Königssee (King's Lake) is another attraction in the region and can be accessed through the district of Shönau am Königssee, approximately 6 km away, with good tourist infrastructure including boat trips across the lake, restaurants and settings for beautiful photos.
The lake, 7.7 km long, is part of the Berchtesgaden National Park with some trails, including the climb to the viewpoint at Archenkanzel, overlooking the lake between the Steinernes Meer mountain range.

A 14 km stretch to the small town of Ramsau is a pleasant walk, gifted with the view of the Church of Saint Sebastian, from 1512, yet another reminder of the Bavarian Alps.
