History and sights of Hallstatt
Considered one of the oldest still inhabited settlements in Europe, with its first salt mine in the world, the village of Hallstatt is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major Austrian tourist attraction.
It is located on the west coast of the beautiful Lake Hallstatt, in the mountainous region of Salzkammergut, which, together with its 16th century alpine houses and alleys, makes for a breathtaking setting.
A funicular railway connects to the Skywalker Hallstatt viewing platform and then to Salzwelten, a former mine with an underground salt lake.
The platform extends 12 meters from the slope, 360 m high, providing an aerial view of the village and panoramic views of the lake to its eastern side, where Obertraun is located, another friendly village that can be a quieter and cheaper alternative to accommodation, as it is just 5 km from Hallstatt, always crowded with visitors from all over the world, mainly Chinese who built a replica of it in their country.
