History and sights of Salzburg
Salzburg, with around 150 thousand inhabitants, is located on the banks of the Salzach River, 315 km from Vienna.
The city preserves its classical and romantic atmosphere, almost like a theme park, especially in its historic center (Altstadt) which provides a pleasant walk with many attractions, including the house where, in 1756, one of its most brilliant children was born: the composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who left a legacy of more than 600 works despite his premature death at the age of 35.
Salzburg Cathedral is dedicated to Saint Rupert and Saint Vergil, who were, successively, the builders of the ancestral churches that gave rise to the cathedral, from the year 774 to 1181.
The current building dates back to the 17th century, when it was completely rebuilt in the Baroque style.
The Festung Hohensalzburg castle, from the 11th century, dominates the city's entire landscape and marks the origins of its history.
It was the stronghold of a powerful archbishopric between the 14th and 19th centuries, when it was annexed to the Austrian Empire.
