History and sights of Schwangau
The municipality of Schwangau in Bavaria is the best destination to stay and explore two of the most important castles in Germany, which can already be seen from the road, before arrival:
- The Hohenschwangau, a 19th-century palace that was the childhood residence of King Ludwig II of Bavaria.
- The most renowned of the romantic route, the fabulous Neuschwanstein, a delusional dream of King Ludwig II, begun in 1869 and never finished by him, incorporating both the architectural fashion known as castle romanticism, and the king's enthusiasm for Richard Wagner's operas .
The castle is visited by around 1.5 million people per year and the best alternative for photographs is from the Mariebrücke, a small bridge next to it that serves as a lookout point.
Another alternative is a hot air balloon ride during high season, when the castle can be framed in front of you.
