History and sights of Utrecht
Utrecht boasts beautiful canals with several quay cellars housing cafes and waterside terraces.
It has several monuments, each contributing to the special atmosphere of this centuries-old city, home to Utrecht University, the largest in the Netherlands.
It has been the country's religious center since the 8th century, with buildings and structures dating back to the High Middle Ages.
In 1579 the seven northern provinces signed the Treaty of Utrecht, joining forces against Spanish rule and marking the beginning of the Dutch Republic.
Walking through its historic center and contemplating its classic architecture with interesting facades and windows is very pleasurable.
